That’s a lot of rope!

4 Oct

Visiting the Maritime Museum was a highlight of a recent trip to San Diego.  Among the many interesting things to see there is the first European vessel to reach America’s west coast, the San Salvador, in 1542.

Sixteenth century technology is an intriguing sight.  While some may walk through a room like this and give it a few seconds to sink in, the amount of rope and what it took to make it, and all the different kinds and thicknesses of rope–that captivated me–and I invite others to pause and marvel.

What materials were gathered, by whom?  Where were these materials found, and when were they first discovered as something that could be woven into a durable tool?  Whose hands created all this rope?  Imagine the magnitude of the labor, for this one ship.  Were these particular ropes crafted with the aid of man-powered machines, such as pulleys and levers?  How did they know how thick to make them–what was the minimum requirement for the load each type of rope was designed to bear?  What were each of these ropes here for?  The crew knew.  Do we still know all of this stuff?  Is this old technology lost?

It is really quite remarkable and worthy of contemplation.  I leave you with images that stimulate imagination…

President Trump Never Disappoints

15 Jun

One thing was certain after the 2016 campaign and election was over:  Donald Trump would become the most entertaining president of American history.  His legacy would be riddled with humorous moments.  Comedians everywhere would rejoice.  There would be no surprises, because he would be predictable in this aspect:  He would provide a fresh round of jokes daily.

Today’s joke is the Qatar debacle.  First, our amateur POTUS publicly stated “the nation of Qatar historically has been, unfortunately, a funder of terrorism at a very high level,” then turned around and sold them $12 Billion in weapons.

Moments like these cause great anticipation for late night shows for the 60% who disapprove of this amateur in office, who quietly smile and wonder about the self acclaimed “deplorables”… Embarrassed much?

Donald J. Trump, you’re fired!

21 Oct

I often think Donald Trump is trying to lose. I used to watch The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice, and a couple of years ago I might have thought he was a viable candidate. But he is atrocious as a public speaker and if he has a diplomatic brain cell, it’s been killed by all the bologna he eats.  He’s shocked me so many times over the past year or so, starting with his sore-loser low-blow behavior when sponsors pulled support and he was fired by NBC, and it’s gotten worse every week.

It seems as if when alone with his thoughts he must be trying to figure out a way to get out of this and still have a brand worth anything.  What could he possibly say thatyou-re-fired-rubber-stamp-43311040 will ensure he loses–he does not act like someone who really wants to be POTUS.

I think he’s terrified of the job. He seems to be sabotaging his campaign. If an apprentice candidate behaved the way he has, he would have fired himself long ago!
